Numbers in Spanish

When learning a language, one of the most important things to quickly get a grasp of is the numbers. After all, from paying for a train ticket to settling the bill in a hotel or buying something at a local market, if you don't know your numbers then you're probably going to struggle. Thankfully, once you've got the hang of how they're pronounced, learning the numbers in Spanish is really quite simple as they follow a pretty regular format. Here's a quick run-down - with a basic pronunciation aid - to help get you started.

Zero (thero): zero/nought
Un/uno (oo-no): one
Dos (dos): two
Tres (tres): three
Cuatro (kwat-ro): four
Cinco (theen-ko): five
Seis (seys): six
Siete (syet-ay): seven
Ocho (o-cho): eight
Nueve (nwe-bay): nine
Diez (dyeth): ten

Then the numbers continue into the teens:

Once (on-thay): eleven
Doce (doth-ay): twelve
Trece (treth-ay): thirteen
Catorce (kat-or-thay): fourteen
Quince (keen-thay): fifteen
Diez y seis (dyeth-ee-seys): sixteen
Diez y siete (dyeth-ee-syet-ay): seventeen
Diez y ocho (dyeth-ee-o-cho): eighteen
Diez y nueve (dyeth-ee-nwe-bay): nineteen
Veinte (bayn-tay): twenty

From here, the first nine numbers are added to the end of twenty, as follows:

Vienticuatro (beyn-tay-kwat-ro): twenty-four
Vienticinco (beyn-tay-theen-ko): twenty-five
Vientiseis (beyn-tay-seys): twenty-six
Vientisiete (beyn-tay-syet-ay): twenty-seven
Vientiocho (beyn-tay-o-cho): twenty-eight
Vientinueve (beyn-tay-nwe-bay): twenty-nine

After that, the numbers in Spanish follow the same basic pattern for thirty, forty etc.

Treinta (treyn-ta): thirty
Cuarenta (kwa-ren-ta): forty
Cincuenta (theen-kwen-ta): fifty
Sesenta (se-sen-ta): sixty
Setenta (se-ten-ta): seventy
Ochenta (o-chen-ta): eighty
Noventa (no-ben-ta): ninety
Cien (thyehn): one hundred

Cuatrocientos (kwat-ro-thyen-tos): four hundred
Quinientos (keen-yen-tos): five hundred

Mil (meel): one thousand
Un million (oon–meel-yon): one million

Beyond that, the ordinal numbers in Spanish (first/second/third etc.) are as follows:

Primero (pree-me-ro): first

Tercero (ter-the-ro): third
Cuarto (kwar-to): fourth
Quinto (keen-to): fifth
Sexto (sex-to): sixth
